Unlike in canon, the Knights of Favonius arrived before Crepus used the Delusion. Instead of using it to protect Diluc, Crepus used it when Ursa went after Kaeya. Crepus suffers backlash from the Delusion and Diluc has to mercy kill him.
Later, Kaeya reveals his origins as a foreign agent to Diluc and Diluc attacks him. However, Diluc stops his attack abruptly, feeling that Crepus's sacrifice would be worth nothing if he hurt or killed Kaeya. Kaeya elects to leave the Ragnvindr house anyway.
Diluc doesn't go to the Knights of Favonius headquarters because he's injured and instead writes to ask for a leave of absence (which ends up lasting quite a bit longer than expected). During the next few years Diluc searches for the origins of the Delusion and how he and his father came to be attacked. He also encounters and kills Ursa the Drake. (Regarding questions of ability/power associated with this, Diluc used both his Vision and Delusion, and the Fatui had Ursa under some kind of stasis.) He doesn't have concrete proof that the Fatui are behind it but enough to raise reasonable suspicions.
In canon Dottore's killing Ursa was a big factor in Snezhnaya's getting a political edge over Mondstadt. As Diluc is now the one who did it, that edge doesn't exist and Mondstadt has a much easier time dealing with the Fatui. Diluc returns to Mondstadt and while he doesn't take up the cavalry captaincy, he remains with the Knights of Favonius. He acts as Jean's assistant when he's around, but he's frequently out on one mission or another. He also runs the winery and occasionally works at the bar, but is more hands off with those. Diluc has declined anything other than a secondary or supporting role, citing that his extended absence with little notice doesn't paint a good picture of him as a leader. As he's still a Knight of Favonius, tales of the Darknight Hero don't go around, but people in Mondstadt are very aware that Diluc patrols at night and won't go easy on criminals.
The personality changes from this are that Diluc is more open to other people in general, though not as he was before his four year absence. Diluc's solemn in public for the most part, but in private with friends he's apt to open up and smile. The Knights of Favonius are his family now, and he's quite warm to almost all of them.
Events with the traveler go along roughly similar lines to canon, though Diluc's role in them is as a knight. The Fatui are not occupying the city, however, as their attempts to strongarm Mondstadt have gone ignored. Diluc goes with the traveler and Jean, and his time point is immediately after defeating Stormterror.
